One of the most highly used liquid fertilizers, Urea Ammonium Nitrate Solution (UAN) is a solution of urea and ammonium nitrate mixed in water.
Properties:
- Clear liquid
Advantages:
- Safe to handle
- Blends easily with most other nutrients and crop protection products
Drawbacks:
- Corrosive to mild steel. Storage tanks need to be sealed/lined
- Should not be mixed with products containing calcium nitrate
- Higher concentrations of N can salt out in cool temperatures–this can be minimized through agitation
- Risk of N volatilization when surface applied
Application methods:
- Injected into the soil, sprayed broadcast onto the soil surface, dribbled on the surface in bands, foliar spray, added to irrigation water
